The “coolest song in the world” isn’t a laurel you go tossing all willy-nilly onto just any track. So you can imagine how honored locals the Krayolas were to find out their “Catherine” would be included on the Wicked Cool label’s compilation album The Coolest Song in the World, Vol. 8, scheduled for a February 17 release.
Wait a minute — volume number eight? Maybe “coolest song in the world” doesn’t mean quite what it used to.
Whatever. “Catherine” — a posthumous tribute to Trinity University urban-studies professor Catherine Powell — is a pretty little hunk of Tex-Mex-infused power-pop, equal parts Big Star and Freddy Fender. And if you ask nicely they might play it at their inaugural Christmas Bash. Maybe if you’ve been really good they’ll also play their bittersweet, seasonally appropriate ballad “Christmas Time,” which debuted nationally in video form on ABC way back in 1982. Though, at this point, you have to imagine that honor is pretty passé compared to writing the world’s coolest song. $10, 8 p.m. Saturday, December 20, Casbeers at the Church, 1150 South Alamo, (210) 271-7791, casbeers.com.
