Now, normally this would be a Critic’s Diss. Lifehouse, don’t forget, is responsible for “Hangin’ by a Moment,” that weirdly romantic Christian “rock” ballad that manages to somehow be simultaneously preachy and soulless. On top of that, this is a free concert sponsored by the freaking U.S. Army in a super-sad promotional deal: “Give the Army telemarketers all your personal information in exchange for a chance to go backstage and meet an adult-contemporary band that was mildly popular in 1997.”
The Army hosting a free Lil Wayne concert would be cause for concern and reason for further bitching about bullshit military recruiting tactics. But an Army-strong Lifehouse gig means that either the military has quit targeting hip poor kids and begun focusing on lame white-collar Protestants or the recruiters are so out of it they think a Lifehouse concert is something people still intentionally go to. Either is a good sign. Happy 2009, everybody. Free, 7 p.m. Friday, Jan 2, Sunset Station, 1174 E. Commerce, (210) 222-9481, sunset-station.com.
