Elvis Birthday Celebration

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2009-01-07

It’s two days too late for his actual b-day (January 8), but considering the King (allegedly) toppled off his throne for good more than 30 years ago, you’re probably safe waiting until Jesse Aron’s Elvis Birthday Bash to celebrate the anniversary of the most momentous day in galactic history (sorry, Big Bang) in style. And at Jesse Aron’s Elvis Birthday Bash, that means “in the style of the original artists.”

The trek to New Braunfels may be annoying but where else can you see this show, which features opening acts from Aron’s wife, Tarie, as Marilyn Monroe, and Aron as Roy Orbison. Then — sporting a tiger-striped jumpsuit so kick ass a second grade girl will sprout mutton chops if she looks directly at it — Aron closes the show as the Tupelo Hip Wiggler himself.

He gets an A for pulling double duty, but can Aron make you believe? Video and audio clips at jessearon.com are pretty convincing to me, but keep in mind that I was born in 1982, so more than half of my exposure to Elvis has been via shitty hack impersonations of him. Call for price, 7 p.m. Saturday, January 10, BraunTex Performing Arts Theatre, 290 West San Antonio St. New Braunfels, (830) 627-0808, brauntex.org.
