2008 was a big year for the Band of Heathens — after releasing their eponymous studio debut last spring, the Austin quintet jumped into extensive touring and has subsequently been approached by some of the top names in alt-country. The group made their first trip overseas in December, played amid the best names in Texas and Americana music at Steamboat, Colorado’s, MusicFest in early January, and are making a pit stop at Sam’s this Saturday before they head back to Germany and the Netherlands for three weeks. They’re roots rock connoisseurs of the post-modern variety, incorporating southern jams, bayou swamp-rock, bar-brand Americana, and a touch of R&B groove. The three exceptionally talented frontmen keep a lively pace, making for rich vocal harmonies and dizzying range. $10/13, 9pm, Sam’s Burger Joint, 330 E. Grayson, (210) 223-2830.
