De Los Muertos

Release Date: 2009-01-28

Underneath the “Sounds Like” heading on their MySpace page, San Antonio’s De los Muertos describe their music as “TexicanGothPunk?” with a question mark to indicate that even the band can’t adequately describe the style. De los Muertos stitch familiar parts — glass-gargling Tom-Waits-ish vocals, Tex Mex guitar riffage, and garage-band rhythm — together like Dr. Frankenstein, and the hulking result alternately staggers and shakes its ass. Formed in 2007, De los Muertos will make their festival debut at Austin’s SXSW in March. Saturday, they’ll be joined by A-town’s schizophrenic cabaret goths Mr. Lewis & the Funeral 5, and the like-minded Hellbound Hearse and Mariachis del Infierno (catch a common theme here?) for what’s sure to be a disorienting, death-obsessed good time. 10 p.m. Saturday, January 31. Jiggers, 1639 Babcock, myspace.com/emokidsneedlove.
