Missi Smith’s show at ONE9ZERO6 is preoccupied with and animated by a curiously curatorial consciousness; the sculptor-assembler-printmaker has created complex, precariously balanced readymades evocative of Duchamp, and intriguing 2-D images that seem half-decayed out of thought-provoking materials I hesitate to call “discarded” — after all, as Missi Smith says in her artist statement: “It is my belief that nothing is truly discarded. That it is all absorbed into our genes, memories, spirits, societies and our environments.” Go check out what Smith’s absorbed, reflected, and created; then take inspiration from the vast, ever-changing, and usable world around you.
