Grupo Fantasma’s funk/Latin/orchestral sound keeps getting bigger and better. A few years back, Grupo caught the eye and ear of the Howard Hughes of the musical world, the man once known as a symbol, the freak of all freaks, Prince. Impressed with these Austinites, Prince set them up with a two-month gig at his Las Vegas nightclub. Since then Grupo has worked as Prince’s unofficial backup band, which is not a bad gig. With a Grammy nomination under their belt, and performances at New Orleans Jazz and Montreal Jazz festivals, momentum has definitely been building. During breaks between sets, perhaps they will share stories about the Purple One. Free, 6-9pm, Main Plaza downtown at Main and Commerce, mainplazaconservancy.org
