You know how the catchier-than-influenza whistling hook of “Young Folks” became annoying after you heard it for the 2,478th time? Well, Peter Bjorn & John are cutting to the chase this time — many of the songs off their newest album, Living Thing, seem designed to aggravate on first listen.
In fact, it’s hard to decide exactly which song is most irritating. Is it the droning, tuneless “I’m Losing My Mind”? What about the “Amsterdam”-rip-off kids’ chorus in “Nothing to Worry About?” Nope, I got it — “Lay It Down” is the all-time low, boasting the ridiculous refrain, “Hey, shut the fuck up, boy! / You are starting to piss me off.” I hate to break this to you, PB&J, but that wouldn’t even sound threatening coming out of 50 Cent, much less a pasty Swedish dude in a cravat.
