Kool DJ Herc, DJ Shadow, DJ from Full House — odds are none of these will be at Blue Bubble Ballroom for the DMC Regional Finals (well, except for Candace Cameron, who I think may be working part-time as a waitress there), but we have been promised performances by Certain Sickness, Supa Smash Bros., and DJ Kico, along with a metric fuckton of hungry young turntablists competing to be the next big wax master or sitcom star (assuming they’re patterning their careers after Cameron or DJ Jazzy Jeff). The DMC DJ battles began in the U.S. in 1986, and notable past champs include A-Trak and the Beastie Boys’ Mix Master Mike. This year marks the competition’s first SA appearance, and May 29’s Southwest Heat kicks off the 2009 competition, which then proceeds to New York City, Los Angeles, and New Orleans before its August 1 final in NYC. Each DJ gets two minutes spin time to prove his or her skills to judges DJ Donnie Dee (above, spinning our 2009 Best of SA party), DJ AK, Manila Ice, and the aforementioned Kico. Tip: If you’re looking for a place to plug in your laptop, you’re in the wrong competition. Watch the Current’s preview video, online on the home page, at sacurrent.com. $10, 8pm Fri, May 29, Blue Bubble Ballroom, 9315 Broadway, myspace.com/dmc_south.
