Ever since its 1990 debut at Houston’s first annual Latino Playwrights Festival, Las Nuevas Tamaleras has been laughed at — for all the right reasons. SA native Alicia Mena’s original bilingual play follows unseasoned cocineras as they tackle making the perfect tamal. To make things even more difficult, the ghosts of legendary tamale experts Doña Juanita y Doña Mercedes show up to criticize every wrong turn las nuevas tamaleras make, with mucho comical antagonism. Although the show runs through December 13, Saturday’s the night to go — tamales, carnitas, beer, wine, and live music follow the performance. $40, 8pm, Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, 1301 Guadalupe St., tamaleras.com (Regular tickets range from $12-$25)
