Libertarian, political satirist, writer, stand-up comedian, and talk-show host Bill Maher is no stranger to controversy. A few of Maher’s loaded comments (one compared retarded children to dogs while the other questioned whether the terrorists involved in 9/11 were in fact “cowards”) caused major advertisers to pull out of Politically Incorrect (which was running on ABC at the time), eventually resulting in the show’s cancellation. In 2003, HBO debuted Real Time With Bill Maher, a more focused version of his previous roundtable-themed show. In 2008, Maher wrote and starred in Religulous, a film that sharply questions organized religion and is among the highest grossing documentaries of all time. On Friday, Maher promises to ruffle a few conservative feathers when he speaks at Trinity’s Laurie Auditorium. Don’t miss the Current’s interview with Maher on page 23. $49.50-$69.50, 8pm, Trinity’s Laurie Auditorium, One Trinity Place, (210) 224-9600, ticketmaster.com
