The New Mel Brooks Musical Young Frankenstein, as it’s officially titled, has been criticized for not living up to the level of brilliance theater-goers expect from Brooks, whose smash hit The Producers is a tough act to follow — as is Brooks’s 1974 film Young Frankenstein. Based on reviews, it seems little of what earned the film an obsessive cult following has survived the translation to stage. The touring play, part of the Cadillac Broadway Across America series, packs in nearly 20 musical routines (including old-school tap and vaudeville-inspired numbers), a marathon of gags (many borrowed directly from the film), and a heavy dose of “giggly smuttiness,” so you’re likely to get your money’s worth.
