Rotel & The Hot Tomatoes

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2010-07-07

According to their website, Austin’s “Rotel & the Hot Tomatoes are beehives for breakfast, leopard-skin for lunch, and satin for supper.” Taking musical and stylistic cues from the ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s, the trio revives familiar songs with such comedic camp that one might incorrectly assume they’re drag queens. Not only are they real ladies with great voices and a full backup band, they’re favorites of the Republican Party (W even hires them for his Christmas parties, and they performed at the RNC in New York). To give you an idea of just how legit these elaborately costumed divas are: They’ve opened for Chubby Checker, the Temptations, Chuck Berry, Roy Orbison, the Supremes, and the Temptations and performed at fundraisers for practically every charity under the sun. Rotel & the Hot Tomatoes’ latest release is titled Hot Sauce and Hairspray. $12, 9pm, Gruene Hall, 1281 Gruene Rd., New Braunfels, (830) 606-1281, gruenehall.com
