One must have an extensive palate in order to have an appetite for the Delicacies Simian Mobile Disco serves up. The techno-based album is filled with exotic landscapes and unusual patterns compared to their last release, Temporary Pleasure. The gelatinous beats and firm bass of “Aspic” set the dish just right. The cracked drums and non-synchronized rhythms on “Thousand Year Egg” leave the song a little runny. The breakdown of “Sweetbread” rises to the occasion in the middle of the song, meshing the layers into one satisfying morsel. “Ortolan,” a French delicacy in which a small songbird is drowned in whiskey and then cooked and eaten whole, finishes off the album with a cry of recollection. Although the portions are extensive, SMD offers listeners a special dessert disk of Mixed Delicacies, recorded live in-studio. These extra treats start off light, and then move toward a more full-bodied sound, leaving the ear with a clean, but savory, finish.
