Expect anything but the explainable when heavy Denim and Fl!ght Gallery host the San Antonio leg of the 8th Annual No Idea Festival, which celebrates creative, improvised music from Texas and beyond. Percussionists Tim Feeney (who lectures at Cornell University) and Nick Hennies (who performs with the Austin New Music Co-Op) kick off the first set of atmospheric sound, followed by a dance-based performance by Maggie Bennett (who teaches movement to New York’s non-dance population via Pilates), a set by avant-garde trio LUCRE (Chris Cogburn, Bryan Eubanks, and Vic Rawlings), and even more improvised music by Houston-based double bassists Damon Smith and Thomas Helton. If you’ve always dreamed of building your own idiosyncratic electronic musical instrument, don’t miss the free workshop (4-6pm) led by Vic Rawlings and Bryan Eubanks, who’ll “both evade and attempt to answer” such questions as “Does the music make the instrument, or is it the other way around?” Don’t ask us — we have absolutely no idea. $10, 8pm, SMART Art Project Space, 1906 S Flores, heavydenim.org, noideafestival.com.
