Art opening: CAM: MIXMASTERS: this is who we are

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-03-10

CAM may seem like a hyperlocal event, what with all the SA artists kicking it this month, but some out-of-town talent is coming in, too. Mixmasters: this is who we are opens this Thursday at ONE9ZERO6 Gallery billed as a dialogue between Austin and SA artists — what are they talking about? Jesus Benavente uses crowd power in I Break Mountains; Ben Aqua runs a local access show called Everything in Heaven is TV; Sean Ripple makes writing, performance, sculpture, and photo essays; Kristina Felix’s pieces drift from quiet paintings to video; producer/director PJ Raval’s character “Christeene” is a radical queer rap star. Genderbending might be an apt metaphor for this group’s tendency to create instability in everything they do. Tendencies run to performance, New Media, and category clashes. These artists may be skeptical of the tales told by the media and Big Art, but they are happily affirmative in their efforts to make more stories. Curated by Leslie Moody Castro and Nina Hassele. Free, 6-9pm, 1906 S Flores, (210) 227-5718. Exhibit on view until Apr 9.
