The Lion in Winter

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-03-10

The Classic Theatre of San Antonio requests your presence at the chateau of King Henry II of England, where a hot, royal mess is unfolding. Set in 1183, James Goldman’s 1966 play The Lion in Winter revolves around three princes (John, a spoiled brat, Geoffrey, the unloved “brains of the family,” and Richard the Lionheart, who’s gay at least part of the time) who scheme for the throne while their mother (Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine) is held captive by their father, who’d just as well start all over by having kids with his 23-year-old mistress. Trivia: The 1968 film adaptation The Lion in Winter made Academy Awards history when Katharine Hepburn tied with Funny Girl’s Barbra Streisand for Best Actress. $20 ($15 for seniors and military; $10 for students), 8pm Thu, Mar 10; 8pm Fri, Mar 11; 8pm Sat Mar 12; 3pm Sun, Mar 13; The Sterling Houston Theater at Jump-Start, 108 Blue Star. For tickets, call (800) 838-3006 or visit classictheatre.org. Through March 27.
