From her days as the undisputed queen of punk hi-jinks in X to the lonesome country twang of The Knitters, Exene Cervenka’s road to rock star maven has been plagued with a depressing air of departure and the impending need to shuffle on, but her fifth solo album follows a strictly elated tune. This is an album of tormented love songs complete with the possibility of new love and intoxicating memories, backed by lamenting pedal steel, Spanish horns, and a haunting Hammond organ playing up folksy ballads that send her sailing off to find her own setting sun. “Already in Love” and “Half Past Forever” can attest to that, but broken hearts and driving snares can’t stop the beat of sweet serenades longing to escape. Mosh pits are out. Amplified country love is in the air.
