Saxophonist and flutist Tia Fuller got a big break when she was chosen as a member of Beyoncé Knowles’ all-female band for 2007’s The Beyoncé Experience world tour. While the tour and appearances with Beyoncé on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning America, and the BET Awards gave Fuller serious cred as a back-up musician, her three solo albums (’05’s Pillar of Strength, ’07’s Healing Space, and ’10’s Decisive Steps), speak for themselves. Influenced by playing alongside greats like Ray Charles, fruitful collaborations with the T.S. Monk Septet, the Sean Jones Quintet, and the Nancy Wilson Jazz Orchestra, and, most importantly, her musical family and upbringing, Fuller masterfully blends elements of post-bop jazz, gospel, funk, and rhythm and blues for a swinging sound that’s all her own. $31, 8pm, Jo Long Theatre, Carver Community Cultural Center, 226 N Hackberry, (210) 207-7211, thecarver.org, tiafuller.com.
