Austin resident Wolfgang Gartner (born Joey Youngman in San Luis Obispo, Calif.) doesn’t even have a full album to his name, but he’s already making big noise. Ranked 70th in DJ Mag’s annual world DJ poll, his debut album is expected in coming weeks on Ultra Music, but there are a few tracks you can check out on iTunes before heading to Rio: his remix of Andy Caldwell’s “Funk Nasty” (it features Gram’ma Funk and earned Gartner a Grammy nomination); his collaboration with deadmau5 (“Animal Rights,” which topped the specialty retailers charts); and “Forever,” which features will.i.am on vocals. He’s done remixes for Britney, the Black Eyed Peas, and Timbaland himself, but arguably his greatest musical achievement is “Illmerica,” both the song and its gorgeous, politically charged video. Gartner just doesn’t make you dance, but think. He’s been described as a funk/house beat master, but his sense of rhythm is as sophisticated as his taste as an arranger. As the video version of “Illmerica” makes clear: this guy’s body might be on the dancefloor, but his heart and brain are in the real world. $10-$20, 9pm, Club Rio, 13307-A San Pedro (281 & Bitters), (210) 403-2582, club-rio.net.
