Express-News fallout day 2: ME Thacker resigns

by

Nervous Express reporters and curious readers continue to contact us about the changing of the guard at the daily paper. Editor Bob Rivard left Tuesday (read his letter to staff). Now Managing Editor Brett Thacker is out. As we continue to make calls, allow us to share now-former ME Thacker's letter to staff, as distributed yesterday.

To many editors, anecdotal ledes can be ponderous and pointless, but indulge me on this one, please.

With the exception of a college summer spent in an oil refinery, newspapers are all I've known during my adult working life - actually, pre-adult, beginning at age 17 phoning bait camps in Southeast Texas and asking, "How's the fishin'?" That's probably not that unique of a story, given how this profession can sink its talons into you in any number of ways and become nothing short of lifeblood.

It's been a privilege to work at the E-N for 28 years, the last eight as managing editor. I can't rave enough about the talent and commitment in the newsroom and the work done day in and day out by the reporters, photographers, researchers, line editors, department heads, editorial assistants and online producers. I save my last and most enduring appreciation for the nest from which I was hatched -- what is now known as the universal desk. Working umpteen years of nights and weekends in Sports as a copy editor, page designer and makeshift graphic artist, especially with tiny staffs in the pre-CCI days, was akin to surgery in a front-line MASH unit. It molded me and many others. You guys and gals, without bylines, are the unsung heroes of this institution.

The buried lede: With Bob's departure comes the chance for me to also branch out and take my life in a new direction. San Antonio is not a sleepy metropolis anymore. It's a dynamic, growing city where opportunity abounds; a place I'm proud to call home. And part of what makes this city special is the Express-News. So as best you can, block out the partisan sniping

at the media and the incessant doomsday chatter, holding fast to the truth that what you do here every day is among the most essential things in this community

I'll be reading and rooting for all of you.
