The San Antonio Scorpions, the newest franchise in the second-division North American Soccer League, beat the Tampa Bay Rowdies Saturday with second-half goals by Hans Denissen (pk) and Aaron Pitchkolan (a header assisted by Denissen, man of the match). The game was played Saturday at Heroes Stadium in front of a crowd of 9,536.
"We want to be a very possession-oriented team and our possession was much better in the second half," head coach Tim Hankinson said after the game. "There is a layer of trust that players have to develop ... as we gain confidence and get results like tonight, that starts to lock in. If you can learn on the job and win, that's the way to do it."
After a sloppy start of the season, this is the second win in a row for the Scorpions, who outshot the Rowdies 15-3 and are now 2-1-1. They will face the Rowdies again at Tampa Bay on May 12, and will return home to face FC Edmonton on May 19. — Enrique Lopetegui
