If hipsters were into sports, they would be all over the X Games. From skateboards to motorbikes, powdery snow to hard-packed dirt, the games are all about the extremely bold and boldly bizarre. In May 2014, the radical brother of the Olympics is riding into Texas and setting up camp, bringing the rev of engines onto the Austinite scene. After more than 10 years in Los Angeles, CA, Austin has been chosen as one of the new locations for the Summer X Games from 2014-17. May 15-18 (even those athletes won’t brave the August sun in South Texas), prepare for Austin’s Circuit of the Americas (COTA) to go from weird to extreme.
The games have grown since their 1995 debut, from a crowd of less than 200,000 to an audience of tens of millions across the globe, as they tune into their TVs and flock into host cities. Athletes compete in sports like BMX racing, skateboarding, snowboarding, and motocross—helmets adorned, hearts racing and medics at the ready.
Home to a 3.4-mile circuit track with a capacity of 120,000 screaming fans, COTA already hosts to the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix. From the technology and reputation of COTA to the unconventional Austin community, it’s a perfect match for the outrageous X Games.
