Want An Abortion? Anti-Choice Texas Lawmaker Says Take An Adoption Class First

Just when you thought the onslaught of demeaning and draconian abortion bills had hit capacity, a new bill filed by Democrat state Sen. Eddie Lucio proves otherwise. Senate Bill 42 mandates women seeking an abortion must first sit through a three-hour adoption class.

The legislation compels the Health and Human Services Commission, with the help of the Department of Family and Protective Services to create the course, which is supposed to be taken not more than 30 days and no less than 24 hours before the procedure. The bill requires women to show their certificate of completion to their abortion physician.

The Brownsville Democrat was the only member of his party in the Senate to vote for the recently passed combination of anti-abortion bills, continually citing his Catholic faith as reason to support the legislation. In his defense on the Senate floor, Lucio said, “By abortion, the mother does not learn to love, but ends the life of even her own child to solve her problems.”

The slew of anti-choice bills add time and cost to women and when factoring in the 2011 sonogram law– which forces women to see an image of the fetus and hear the fetal heartbeat 24 hours before an abortion– they will now be forced to make (at least) three trips to the doctor. Aside from being considered offensive, Lucio’s bill appears redundant– under legislation passed in 2003, women are already required to be given a resource directory that includes information about public and private adoption resources by their abortion physician.
