Bonehead Quote of the Week: Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst on Impeaching President Obama

by

During a Forth Worth area Tea Party meeting earlier this week initially slated for a discussion on, “the Muslim Brotherhood’s supposed infiltration of the United States,” attendees ended up getting an earful from candidates vying to replace Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst in the 2014 election. But it was Dewhurst himself that made the boldest statement, as The Texas Observer reports:

“This election is about protecting you and your freedoms, which are given to you by God, but which are being trampled on by Barack Obama right now. I don’t know about you, but Barack Obama ought to be impeached,” he said.  “Not only for trampling on our liberties, but what he did in Benghazi is just a crime.”

Edged out of the 2012 U.S. Senate primary race by Tea Party favorite Ted Cruz and hoping to cling to his lite guv post amid a pool of aggressive candidates like state Sen. Dan Patrick (R-Houston) and Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, Dewhurst’s call to impeach the Democratic president seems to be a pretty clear and brazen attempt to win affection from the loyal Tea Party crowd who previously couldn't quite warm up to the incumbent. As the Observer notes, “rarely has so high-profile a state political figure as Dewhurst called for impeachment.”
