Gloria Steinem Feminist and "Hopeaholic" Turns 80




Today is Gloria Steinem’s 80th birthday, and while Google doodle dropped the ball, the least I can do is direct your attention to one bright spot in the internet that is commemorating her legacy. Makers is a unique digital portal that introduces you to thousands of inspiring, radical women. It has a library of short documentaries  showcasing thousands of stories by and about women across time and place.

Today, in addition to a very special 80th birthday video which includes a archived appearance by Nora Ephron, there is a gallery of photos featuring Steinem from girlhood and a gallery of her most memorable quotes.

Really, HBO should be streaming for free the landmark portrait, Gloria Steinem: In Her Own Words. Alas, if you don’t have access to HBO, the short docs featured on Makers will give you a sense, or remind you, of the spirit and hope powering that f-word.



And well, this is just too funny to miss: in honor of Steinem’s birthday, Martha Stewart pledges to hop a lot. I can’t wait to see what this looks like.
