Awesome New Car Engine is 15% More Efficient Than The One You're Driving

Those of you rolling around San Antonio in your Prius and other Hybrid cars, science is making a new car engine and it gets better gas mileage than you.

Southwest Research Institute (SwRi) has developed a prototype engine. According to the SwRi press release, the engine is 15% more efficient than mainstream car engines of today. A key component to this engine involves one cylinder recirculating the carbon dioxide and hydrogen back into the intake manifold. In turn, it gives the engine a significant boost. So much so, the engine gets a whopping 54.5 miles a gallon.

Unfortunately, you can't just walk into the car engine store and buy one; this is only a prototype. On the plus side, SwRi has placed this awesome engine in, of all things, a garishly painted Buick.

12:30 pm, April 15, 2014: We have changed the title for accuracy. The new engine does not yet get 54.5 miles per gallon, engineers as SwRi are working to reach that goal. In 2025, the Environmental Protection Agency will require auto manufacturers to to meet 54.5 miles-per-gallon standards.
