The report points to “strong action” taken by SA’s local City-owned utility—CPS Energy— to promote solar use, like its goal of using renewable energy for 20 percent of its energy demand by 2020, with at least 100 MV [medium voltage] from non-wind sources. SA is home to 1,581 solar projects, totaling 16.5 MW megawatts installed, according to Solar San Antonio.
At the end of 2012, solar power in Austin and SA accounted for more than 44 percent of all utility-supported solar power in Texas.
Overall, the U.S. has 200 times more solar power capacity than it did in 2012. But the report notes it’s just 20 cities, representing 0.1 percent of the land area of the U.S. that comprise seven percent of solar capacity. Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, San Jose and Honolulu are among the top five.
