Legendary country musician Willie Nelson got on the road again to serenade state Sen. Wendy Davis and supporters during a Sunday campaign fundraiser for the gubernatorial candidate. Nelson (pictured above with Davis) entertained crowds at a Houston backyard BBQ event, effectively endorsing the Forth Worth senator for guv.Considering his progressive views— Nelson’s pro-renewable resources, pro-LGBT rights, pro-animal rights and yes, pro-marijuana legalization— it is no huge surprise to see Willie give Wendy the nod. And it wouldn’t be his first endorsement of a politician; Nelson supported Ohio Democrat, U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich’s presidential run and advocated for Kinky Friedman on the Texas ballot during the 2006 election for governor and again in 2010 for his bid for agriculture commissioner. In terms of support from entertainers, looks like Davis is ahead—getting Willie on your side is a hell of a lot cooler (not to mention, far less misogynistic) than faded out rocker Ted “Obama is a subhuman mongrel” Nugent, who followed Davis’ Republican challenger, Attorney General Greg Abbott, around the campaign trail in what many thought was a little too close for comfort.
