Direct Capital has compiled a list of the most-searched brands in each U.S. state by analyzing the popularity of over 200 brand names in Google Trends. Why Direct Capital has done this, I’m not entirely sure, but it gives us another chance to look at pictures and shamelessly judge our neighboring states.
Unfortunately, some of the top brands per state are pretty obvious (read: boring), like Minnesota’s Target, Illinois’s McDonald’s, Kentucky’s KFC, and Arkansas’s Walmart. All of those companies are headquartered in the states where they are trending.
Other less-surprising findings are that Floridians are Googling Disney (hello, Disney World), and people in Arizona and New Mexico know how to turn up, hence the Jose Cuervo and Patrón. It’s kind of a shocker, however, that Oklahoma’s doing its damnedest to join the party with their wimpy Skyy Vodka. Maybe one day, Oklahoma. . .one day.
Poor Californians, on the other hand, should probably consider limiting their pot intake and start reassessing their lives, because now everyone knows they are Googling Yahoo. Who does that unless they're high? Why are you using one search engine to search for another? I’ll never understand you people. But hey Californians, at least you’re not Googling Google like the poor, lost Oregonians. I’m concerned that perhaps they haven’t learned how to internet yet.
Here in Texas, our embarrassing top brand is Facebook. As someone who doesn’t have a Facebook, I can’t say I understand our obsession with continuously creeping on each other. I also don’t understand why we are Googling Facebook instead of typing “facebook.com” into our address bars. Is the dot com too much to deal with? Have we all gotten to the point where we just type everything into Google now instead of using our address bars? This is either because of laziness, Texans, or because of a shameful lack of internet know-how that I would expect only from Oregonians. I won’t stand for it. Use your address bars, or at least make some bookmarks.
