Sylvia Romo, former Bexar County Tax Assessor and Collector, formally announced Tuesday that she is running to replace State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte in the Texas Senate. Van de Putte is vacating her seat in the upper chamber to run for mayor of San Antonio.
Romo, a former member of the Texas House of Representatives representing northwest San Antonio, faces at least two challengers in the race: State Reps. Trey Martinez Fischer and Jose Menendez, two long-time San Antonio Democrats who have represented the city at the Capitol for a decade.
Romo is a San Antonio native and graduated from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
"I am truly humbled by the bipartisan support from our community that has encouraged me to run for state senator,” she said in her press release. “As a mother and proud grandmother, I will stand up for Texas families, support small businesses, work to create high paying jobs, and fight to give our children the chance to succeed.”
Gov. Rick Perry has set the special election date to replace Van de Putte for Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015. Early voting begins Monday, Dec. 29, 2014.
