Tesla Motors is asking San Antonio to rezone a five-acre tract on the North Side so it can build a showroom.
San Antonio didn't get Tesla Motors' much sought-after battery factory, but it might get a little showroom where the curious can look at the company's electric cars.
Tesla Motors is asking the City of San Antonio to rezone five acres of land between East Sonterra Boulevard and Loop 1604, City documents show.
Members of the planning committee will consider the request later this afternoon.
Tesla Motors manufactures electric cars, but in Texas, only factory-licensed dealers can sell vehicles to consumers.
While some states allow consumers to buy cars from Tesla Motors, Texas does not and the "gallery" would be for looking only, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports
Joe Krier, a City Council member who represents the area, told the radio station that he would welcome a Tesla Motors gallery.
Tesla Motors is one of Elon Musks' many ventures. Musks' company SpaceX was recently cleared to build a facility in the Rio Grande Valley that will launch rockets into space and deliver supplies to the International Space Station for NASA. Musk is one of the founders of PayPal.
Most recently, Musk was eyeing San Antonio for a "gigafactory" battery plant for Tesla Motors. But the Alamo City lost out to Las Vegas, which offered more subsidies to the company, the Las Vegas Sun reported
