The Texas state Representative who came up with the term "terror babies" during an Anderson Cooper interview has filed a bill that would make it a criminal offense for a woman to enter a male restroom.
The proposal, a creation of Debbie Riddle, R-Tomball, admittedly, aims to restrict transgender persons from using the restroom that coincides with their gender identity.
"This is the 1st day of our Legislative Session here in Texas. I am rolling up the sleeves of my new red dress & getting to work. I have several bills I think you may like. One will protect women & children from going into a ladies restroom & finding a man who feels like he is a woman that day," Riddle wrote on Facebook on January 13
, before carrying on about taxes, limiting the size of government and open carry.
House Bill 1748 creates state jail felony for business owners who "allow" a person "to repeatedly enter a locker room, shower facility, or toilet facility in the building that is designated for use by persons of a gender that is not the same gender as the individual's gender," according to the proposal.
The legislation would also create a new Class A misdemeanor.
"An individual who is at least 13 years of age may not enter a locker room, shower facility, or toilet facility that is designated for use by persons of a gender that is not the same gender as the individual's gender," the bill states.
When San Antonio was amending its non-discrimination ordinance to include protections for gender identity and sexual orientation, Texas Values, an advocacy group, said
the ordinance would allow men to use women's restrooms.
PolitiFact rated this statement as false and provided a long primer with lots of examples
about this line of reasoning, which is used by opponents of LGBT rights to argue against including gender identity in local non-discrimination ordinances in Texas.
Riddle's behavior, however, has made headlines before.
In 2010, she was on Anderson Cooper 360
and was not prepared for the grilling she received from Cooper over her belief in the "terror babies" threat. According to The Huffington Post
, Riddle told Cooper that terrorist organizations might send pregnant women to give birth in the U.S. so those children, who would later be trained as terrorists abroad, could come and go from the U.S. without raising any suspicions.
In 2012, she told a South Texas College of Law student named Abdul Pasha to go live in Afghanistan after the man suggested Riddle read an article she posted about soldiers in Afghanistan receiving sensitivity training.
“Our soldiers do NOT need to be taught how to be sensitive to radical Muslims,” Riddle proclaimed. “They do not need to be worried about blowing their nose wrong or using their left hand and offending someone. . . . They should not be bothered with being sensitive to people who want us all dead! We need a true leader in the White House — a vote for Obama is a vote to destroy our country,” Riddle wrote, prompting Pasha to suggest she may not have read the article, which caused Riddle to lash out at the man.
