Did the San Antonio Water System overcharge customers or was it just a blazing hot summer combined with new "more efficient meters" and unfound leaks leading to higher costs?
Here's what SAWS said in a press release after people started complaining about unusually high bills:
The bill increases are due to estimated reads by meter readers, old slow meters that have been replaced with new, more efficient meters, and true additional water usage due to a hot and dry July and August, as well as possible unidentified leaks.
At City Council Thursday morning, SAWS CEO Robert Puente "will outline the conditions which contributed to these billing issues and the response that Mr. Puente has instituted to address the situation."
According to the agenda item, SAWS has received inquiries from customers "in various areas of the city."
In a press release, Puente apologized for catching ratepayers by surprise and said SAWS is aggressively working to address and alleviate concerns.
“We are going to review every bill a customer disputes and work with them in order to satisfy the issue to their content,” Puente says in the news release.
