In a long-awaited but much-needed development for Ted Cruz, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott endorsed the Lone Star senator for president last night.
Cruz is a political protege of Abbott's, having served as Texas' solicitor general while Abbott was the attorney general. Abbott called Cruz "a Constitutionalist whose judgment I trust to appoint the right judges to the United States Supreme Court" in a video message.
"Conservative values are at his core. He's principled. He's fearless. And he has true conviction," Abbott said.

Although an endorsement from Abbott was predictable, not netting it would have been catastrophic for Cruz. After scoring a big win in the Iowa caucuses, his campaign has been shut out in subsequent contests has been shut out by Donald Trump.
Cruz is now pinning his hopes to a big showing on Tuesday, March 1, dubbed "Super Tuesday" because 13 states are up for grabs. That includes Texas, where Cruz is still favored. A victory by Trump or rival Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida would be a disaster for the Cruz campaign.
