"Twin towers" of twin mattresses. Get it?!
For some people, September 11 has become a day to remember those lost during the single worst terrorist attack on American soil. For others, it's become a marketing gimmick to sell some mattresses.
On Thursday, someone on Facebook shared this video with local TV station Kens5 showing what appears to be an advertisement from a Miracle Mattress store near Leon Valley announcing their "Twin Tower Sale." Buy any size mattress on 9/11, the ad says, and get a twin-mattress price. At the end of the ad, two guys tumble into and knock down twin towers comprised of twin mattresses just to underscore the point.
To be fair, the folks at Miracle Mattress aren't even the first people this week who have attempted to turn 9/11 into a crass marketing ploy. Consider the Florida Wal-Mart that set up a Coke display with
cases of soda stacked into twin towers
, accented by a "We Will Never Forget" sign.
But the local Miracle Mattress ad might be the first time someone thought it would be a good idea to joke
about 9/11 to move some product. Earlier this morning, after the first hints of what will likely be a wave of social media backlash over the stunt, the company took down the ad and issued an apology on its Facebook page.
Miracle Mattress owner Mike Bonanno has now also issued this letter of apology:
