The Texas Senate voted Wednesday to ban the use of red light cameras as a means of traffic enforcement. Currently, the cameras are used as a way to prevent car wrecks and accidents at busy intersections.

While police and other supporters of the cameras claim they help to reduce crashes, critics argue that the cameras are an invasion of privacy, put a burden on drivers to prove their innocence and are used to raise cash for local governments, reports the Associated Press. The Senate has already voted twice to ban the traffic cameras, however, the ban has not passed through the Texas House.  The bill banning these cameras now moves to the House floor for a vote.

The senate also approved a bill on Wednesday that would ban state and local governments from block car registrations due to unpaid or outstanding tickets issued by the red light cameras.
