Sandra Bullock & Wendy Davis
Sandra Bullock is slated to fill former state Senator Wendy Davis’ famous pink sneakers in an upcoming film about her life and the 11-hour filibuster that propelled her into the national spotlight.
With one condition: Bullock said she'll play Davis' role in the film, titled Let Her Speak
, as long as she likes the director, who has yet to be selected, Deadline
In 2013, clad in hot pink sneakers, Davis stood on the floor of the Texas Senate for 11 hours without eating, drinking, or going to the bathroom to filibuster Senate Bill 5, a sweeping anti-abortion bill from GOP lawmakers that required all facilities where abortions were performed in Texas to meet hospital-like standards, and that all doctors performing abortions have admitting privileges to a hospital within 30 miles of an abortion clinic.
Though Davis’s filibuster halted the bill that night, a version of SB 5 eventually passed in a subsequent special session (this time labeled House Bill 2), shuttering more than half of the abortion clinics in the state. However, in 2016, the Supreme Court
deemed the law unconstitutional, saying it placed an “undue burden on abortion access.”
On the whirlwind night of her filibuster, Davis found support in the thousands of protesters
wearing orange who flooded the Texas Capitol. At one point, they chanted “Let her speak!” — inspiring the title of the new film.
The film is still in early stages, and will be shopped to studios over the next week, Variety
