A University of Texas student was arrested last week and charged with DWI after allegedly crashing her car into a restaurant on The Drag, the university's strip of shops and restaurants.
reports that 21-year-old Esther Shim, a junior in the College of Communication, crashed her vehicle into Poke Bowl late last week, which caused the structure of the restaurant to collapse around the car. The debris of the impact kept the car from going further into the restaurant.
Two UT police officers arrived at the scene and rescued Shim out of the vehicle. She only had minor injuries, but upon further examination from Austin-Travis County EMS, it appeared that she was drunk. Reports show that she argued with police and actually demanded a breathalyzer.
When she was confronted by police, Shim yelled "I'm a UT student! You can't arrest me!"
Shim repped UT hard when the university police told her that Austin PD was getting involved. She said she would only speak to UT police and reiterated that they couldn't arrest her since she's a UT student. However, Austin Police still placed her under arrest in an isolation cell at Travis County Jail for behaving erratically.
As for the restaurant, owner Tuan Nguyen said he and his staff are working to get it up and running again, though it will be closed for the timebeing.
