A week after Carlos Uresti announced he would resign from the Texas Senate
, his brother Tomas Uresti threw his hat in the ring to fill the empty seat.
Uresti, the representative for Texas House District 118, filed the necessary paperwork
to enter to the special election that Governor Greg Abbott called for Senate District 19 in light of Carlos Uresti's resignation. The election is scheduled for Tuesday, July 31.
"I am confident I can work with the hard-working communities across Senate District 19 to effectively represent the district's needs," Rep. Uresti said in a press release.
His announcement comes months after he lost a re-election bid in the Texas House, during a time brother Carlos made headlines for his dramatic courthouse trial in the FourWinds Ponzi scheme, for which he was handed a 12-year prison sentence. Family ties aside, Tomas has experience, having previously served on the board of directors for the Bexar County Appraisal District and the Harlandale ISD Board of Trustees.
Tomas Uresti isn't alone in trying to fill the seat. State Rep. Roland Gutierrez
and former U.S. Rep. Pete Gallego
announced their intent to fill the seat almost as soon as Carlos Uresti was convicted back in February. Charlie Urbina Jones, Pete Flores
, Jesse "Jay" Alaniz (who was also a longtime Harlandale trustee), Carlos Antonio Raymond
and Tony Valdivia
Whoever wins the election will complete former Senator Uresti's term, which ends in January 2021.
