Via Fuck Bird Scooters - San Antonio Edition
A new Facebook group apparently aspires to be a hangout for San Antonio's scooter haters.
Those dockless Bird electric scooters dotting downtown sidewalks now have their own Facebook group. And let's just say the person who set it up ain't a fan.
"Fuck Bird Scooters - San Antonio Edition"
popped up on old people's favorite social-media site about a day ago with a profile photo of what looks like an electric scooter engulfed in hellish flames.
"Had to watch a handicapped woman in a wheelchair move some scooters out of her way today on Commerce street because these fucking Bird scooters were taking 3/4 of the sidewalk," the moderator posted yesterday.
Several other photos of inconveniently parked or discarded scooters also populate the group, which so far has 40 likes.
What Bird brings to downtown S.A. is open to interpretation. Fans extol the scooters as a cheap, no-emissions way to close the "last mile" between public transportation and a final destination. But for some pedestrians — and curmudgeons — they represent an annoying obstacle or even a safety risk.
Earlier this month a San Antonio woman was run down
by a reckless scooter pilot outside a downtown building, and similar news reports
have popped up around the country as urban centers adapt to these electrified rides whizzing across their sidewalks.
Again, we stand by our prediction that there's a backlash in the wings
. And "Fuck Bird Scooters - San Antonio Edition" may just be the opening salvo.
