Using one of your political opponent's tricks only works if you master the trick first.
Case in point: Sen. Ted Cruz's attempt at using Facebook Live, a favorite tool of Rep. Beto O'Rourke, his rival in Texas' surprisingly tight senate race. During a Facebook Live interview last week with conservative talk radio personality Mark Davis, the proceedings spun into a techno-meltdown that went viral for all the wrong reasons.
After the camera view flipped sideways, an increasingly ruffled Cruz tried to coach his staffer on how to fix it. "Don't hold your hand over the camera," he said. "I think you need to hold it vertically. I don’t know that, but it’s sideways when you’re holding it horizontal."
After nearly a minute of fumbling, the staffer appears to get the horizontal-vertical thing figured out before accidentally reversing the view so we get a lengthy shot of her forehead.
"Emily, you're now broadcasting yourself," Cruz says. "You flipped it."
