Donald Trump is shown "working" as hard as a furloughed employee in this White House publicity photo.
With President Trump in the Lone Star State to shill for his pinche border wall, it seems appropriate to point out just how many Texans are taking it in the shorts thanks to the shutdown he's forced
over the wall's funding.
Likely, Trump will spend at least some of his visit on photo ops with Border Patrol agents — about 54,000 of which are estimated to be working without pay, according to the feds' own numbers.
But those agents and their families aren't the only ones doing without.
A total of 36,000 federal employees in Texas are now working for agencies without appropriations, according to a recent tally by the magazine Governing
Among those affected: 9,000 Treasury Department employees, 5,700 Homeland Security employees and 4,300 Transportation Department employees. And that's not counting NASA and the Small Business Administration, which also have significant operations in Texas.
It's unclear how many of Texas' federal employees are now going without paychecks, but Politico this morning reported
air traffic controllers – found at all 117 of the state's airports, by the way — are among those unpaid for their last two weeks of work.
And if the shutdown continues, the woes won't stop at late paychecks. About 380,000 federal workers nationwide are likely to be furloughed — that means not working at all — if the impasse continues, according to a Senate report
So, grip and grin, Mr. President. Just don't be surprised if some of those federal agents spit Texas-size throat oysters into their hands right before the photo op.
