A 1890 ranch in Helotes abutting the 1,000-acre Rancho Diana Natural Area has hit the market for $1.8 million. Beyond its secluded setting next to a sprawling nature preserve, the 18-acre property is packed with history, according to its listing agent.

The land was given as payment to an attorney who helped South Texas' revered Maverick family — yes, the same one from which the word "maverick" originates — win a legal battle that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. At issue was whether the family's land holdings actually belonged to the King of Spain.

The ranch's three-bedroom, two-bath home has clearly been updated since its late-1800s vintage. The renovated kitchen, for example, features an iridescent glass tile backsplash and granite countertops. However, some historic elements remain, including a water cistern that "adds a ton of character" and could be used as an office or guest room, according to the property listing.

The ranch's stone front wall includes a metal gate with custom art depicting a live oak tree as its centerpiece, and the main patio, perched on a ridge overlooking more live oaks, includes a stone barbecue pit "large enough to roast a pig," the listing states.
